Vivo is rethinking the camera system for its upcoming X500 Ultra flagship. Fresh leaks show the company actively testing three different 200-megapixel periscope telephoto sensors before making a final choice.
According to tipster Digital Chat Station on Weibo, Vivo is evaluating sensors with optical formats of 1/1.12-inch, 1/1.3-inch, and 1/1.4-inch. The largest 1/1.12-inch option currently stands out as the most advanced choice for superior image quality. Meanwhile, the smaller 1/1.3-inch and 1/1.4-inch sensors offer a smarter balance between performance and sleek design.
Larger sensors capture more light and deliver better telephoto results. However, they also need extra internal space and a bigger camera bump. Smaller sensors, on the other hand, help keep the phone slimmer without sacrificing too much capability.
This news builds on an earlier report from the same tipster. Vivo reportedly dropped plans for a dedicated 10x periscope telephoto camera. Instead, the brand now focuses on a single 200-megapixel periscope unit paired with advanced in-sensor zoom technology.
The X500 Ultra remains in active development, so its final camera setup could still evolve. As a result, the company continues to weigh imaging power against overall device thickness and aesthetics.
Industry watchers expect the Vivo X500 Ultra to skip a 2026 launch. Insiders predict an arrival in the first half of 2027.
