    Android Adds Direct Password and Passkey Transfers Between Managers

    Google has added a new Android tool for moving passwords and passkeys. Users can switch compatible password managers without saving credentials to a separate file. The phone handles the hand-off. Passkeys can move as well. That was not possible with the old export method. Four services support the flow today. More are expected later.

    The old route was riskier. People exported passwords as an unencrypted text file. Those secrets could sit exposed on the device during the copy. Passkeys did not travel with that file. After a switch, users had to register passkeys again on each site and app. The new path avoids that extra setup for supported services.

    The move starts in the manager you want to use next. Choose import or copy from another provider. The app then hands the job to Android. The system lists installed managers that can act as the source. Pick your current vault. Android opens that app. You review the selected logins. You approve the transfer. Android then copies the passwords and passkeys into the new manager. Google says the copy can finish in a few seconds.

    The steps are short. Open the destination password manager. Select import or copy from another provider. Let Android take over. Choose the source manager from the compatible list. Review the items in the old app. Authorise the transfer. Wait for Android to complete the move.

    Google Password Manager is part of the set. It can import through this flow. It can also export stored passwords. The other launch partners are 1Password, Bitwarden Password Manager, and Dashlane. Google says more vendors will join.

    The feature matters because passkeys are tied to a provider. File export never moved them cleanly. A system-level transfer keeps the secrets off an open text dump. Availability still depends on both apps supporting the Android bridge. Check that both managers appear in the list before you start. Then change the default autofill service after the copy if you plan to use the new vault daily.
